Cleanup from the strong storm that hit Southington Saturday evening is well under way but nowhere near finished, as many large trees that came down still need to be removed and damaged structures await repair. As of 11am on Monday morning, Eversource’s website is reporting that the 182 Southington customers still without power can expect to have their service restored by the end of the day on Tuesday.

For most of the town, Saturday’s storm was nothing more than an opportunity for Mother Nature to put on her own Independence Day fireworks show. Yet in the northeast corner of Southington, a very intense storm cell brought downpours, large hail, and winds that briefly reached hurricane-strength, snapping or uprooting hundreds of mature trees.

“Our canopy (used to shade the kids’ sandbox) flew over our neighbors’ fence and hedge. Totally mangled. It was pinned down by heavy duty spiral stakes. The stake tops just snapped off or are bent parallel to the ground and the metal canopy frame tore. A branch fell on our neighbor’s garage and his Jeep inside. Pretty sure this was at the start of the Andrew’s St microburst. Eversource originally told us we’d have power restored at 6am on July 5. They’ve been kicking the can down the road and the most recent update is 11:45pm, July 7. We are grateful to have a generator that covers most of our house, but we have plenty of neighbors who don’t and are going without running water and have lost all their food.” Britt Elise Lynch

“Our corn was blown over! But it pales in comparison to what others faced. The wind must have whipped around a lot to cause the damage in town. Hope all are safe and get power back soon!” Jannine Panek
