Southington's Gas Prices, From Lowest To Highest

At some point everyone struggles to make their budget fit their needs, particularly when it comes to essentials like gas.
To help local residents look for the best deal, the Southington Outsider decided to draw up a list of the gas prices at all 26 stations in town, in order from least to most expensive.
The list at the end of this article gives the cash price for regular gas advertised at each station on December 12. As most gas-buyers know, stations usually tack on an additional fee of 8-10 cents per gallon for payments made with a debit or a credit card; premium grades and diesel fuel can run anywhere from 10 cents to $1.00 more per gallon.

Some clear trends emerged from our survey. Gas at name-brand stations like Mobil, BP, Shell, or Sunoco is usually more expensive, while independent stations tend to have cheaper fuel. Convenience-store chains such as 7-11 and Cumberland Farms also offer lower-than-average prices – these businesses count on making money from in-store purchases.
The difference in prices among stations in the same general location sometimes came as a surprise. The two most expensive places in Southington, Mobil ($3.899) and Sunoco ($3.879) on West Street, are located across the street from each other, just north of the I-84 exit. Yet the two least expensive stations, Metro Gas ($2.599) and Gulf ($2.679), are situated on the south side of the overpass, less than a quarter mile away. This means that someone willing to make a quick trip across the bridge could save close to $20 on a 15-gallon fill-up.
Half of the stations surveyed had prices in the $2.90-3.10 per gallon range. The average across all stations, $3.021, is very close to the state average, which was $3.033 per gallon on December 12. The national average that same day was $2.917 per gallon.
Over the past year, gas prices have not actually changed all that much. Back in February we photographed the price boards of a few stations nearby. The Citgo at 202 Main St. was advertising $2.969 then,

and remains at $2.969 today - although diesel is ten cents cheaper:

One final note. The cheapest station on our list, Metro Gas, recently attracted attention in a bad way when a delivery driver from East Haven-based Forbes Premium Fuel accidentally filled the underground tank for regular fuel with diesel instead. On November 28, some 25 non-diesel vehicles were fueled from that tank before the problem was recognized and sales cut off.
The bad fuel in Metro Gas's tank has since been removed. Affected consumers can file a complaint with Forbes by calling 203-468-2777, or email the Connecticut Department of Consumer Protection at DCP.FoodandStandards@ct.gov.
