Blue Knights Sports Roundup & Preview (October 26)

Many Southington High School fall teams have already competed in the State Championship, while others are gearing up for postseason play. Here are all the latest results and upcoming matchups for the Blue Knights.


Boys Cross Country


The Blue Knights finished third out of 21 teams at the Class LL State Championship with a score of 123. Sophomore Logan Perrella led the way for Southington, finishing 15th with a time of 17:14.

 

Senior Ethan Hoffman was right behind, literally, as he finished 16th with a time of 17:15. Junior Michael Blankenship came in 21st (17:19) while junior Samuel Cheek placed 35th (17:32). Fellow junior Stephen Rahenkamp rounded out Southington’s top five, finishing in 36th (17:36).

 

Cheek, Hoffman, Perrella, Blankenship, Rahenkamp and junior Joey Tardiff were all named to the All-Central Connecticut Conference team.

Boys Golf


Southington boys golf competed in the Class LL State Tournament on October 21. The Blue Knights placed 15th out of 16 teams with a score of 334. For an inside look into this year’s boys golf team check out our latest sports feature on the Southington Outsider.

 

Senior captains Brady Staszewski and Tyson Mahaffy tied for 54th with an 82. Junior Evan Moscibrodzki tied for 62nd with an 83 while fellow junior Kaeden Bass tied for 76 with an 87. Junior Ryan LaRosa rounded out the top five by tying for 79th with an 88.

Boys Soccer


Southington boys soccer ended their season with a 3-11-2 record. Only the top eight teams advance to the Central Connecticut Conference Tournament. Furthermore, a winning percentage of at least 40 is necessary to qualify for the Class LL State Tournament.

 

The Blue Knights fell 3-1 against Plainville before falling 1-0 at home against New Britain to close out the campaign.

Field Hockey


Southington field hockey split a pair of games to end their season, finishing the 2025 campaign with a 4-11-1 record. The Blue Knights defeated South Windsor 3-2 before falling to Avon 2-1.

 

With a winning percentage below 40, Southington did not qualify for the Class LL State Tournament.


Football


Coming off of their bye week, Southington took on Manchester in their final away regular season game of the season. The Blue Knights earned a 28-20 victory, moving to 3-3 on the season.

 

Southington opened the scoring with a 68-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Jacoby Roman to senior Jaxiel Rivera. But Manchester would then intercept a pass for a touchdown and throw an 11-yard score of their own to take a 14-7 lead after the first quarter.

 

The Blue Knights managed to battle back, as senior Lonnie Green scored on a two-yard touchdown run. Then, Roman would find junior Walker Mierzejewski for a 59-yard touchdown pass, taking a 21-14 halftime lead.

 

Roman threw his third touchdown pass of the day late in the third quarter, a seven-yarder to junior Leif Renehan. The Blue Knights had scored 21 unanswered points and were in a 28-14 advantage. Manchester scored on a three-yard touchdown run mid-fourth quarter. But it wasn’t enough as Southington held on for victory.

 

The Blue Knights will next return home to face Platt on October 30.

Girls Cross Country


Competing at the Class LL State Championship, Southington placed seventh out of 20 teams with a score of 218. Senior Katie Cavanaugh led the Blue Knights in finishing 10th with a time of 19:50.

 

Freshmen then took Southington’s next three spots with Maddie Canner-O’Mealy (21:22), Emily Phipps (22:00) and Emily Blankenship (22:37) placing 33rd, 52nd and 65th respectively. Sophomore Jenna Tartarelli rounded out the top five, placing 72nd (23:06).

 

Cavanaugh, Canner-O’Mealy, Phipps and Blankenship were all named to the All-Connecticut Conference team.

Girls Soccer


The Blue Knights ended their season with a bang, using a strong attack to win their final two games of the season. Southington defeated Maloney 10-1 before taking down New Britain 8-0. Their 10 goals against Maloney marked a new season-high, as senior Gianna Mathews scored four of them.

 

Southington did not compete in the Central Connecticut Conference Tournament, as the top eight teams advanced. However, the Blue Knights did qualify for the Class LL State Championship by virtue of their 9-5-2 record. First round State Tournament action is set to begin on either October 31 or November 1, depending on conditions.


Girls Swimming


Southington won a pair of meets to close out their regular season, advancing to postseason play with an 8-3 record. The Blue Knights defeated Meriden Co-Op 89-72 and Berlin, on Senior Night, 95-73.

 

Girls swimming will next compete in the Central Connecticut Conference Championships on October 28. Class LL State Championship trials will take place on November 8, with the finals taking place on November 12.

Girls Volleyball


Southington girls volleyball split a pair of games to end their regular season, entering the Central Connecticut Conference Tournament with a 10-8 record. The Blue Knights defeated New Britain 3-0 (25-6, 25-14, 25-19) before falling to Glastonbury 3-1 (25-22, 25-16, 17-25, 25-22).

 

In their matchup against New Britain, Senior Laura Esguerra and freshman Emme Steindl both made 16 assists, with the former adding seven aces. Junior Lily Eidukaityte recorded nine kills and four digs as juniors Lauren Warych and Meredith Barry made six and five kills respectively. Senior Camilla Garcia put up six kills while senior Alexandra Wagner had four. Senior Paige Raines made nine digs as senior Sehera Coma put up eight aces and four kills. Fellow senior Cameron Wallace recorded three aces.

 

Against Glastonbury, Eidukaityte put up 14 kills, 14 digs and three blocks as Raines made 19 digs. Wagner recorded nine kills while Barry made eight and Warych had five with an ace. Wallace made nine digs as junior Grace Zehnder put up eight. Steindl recorded 41 assists and five digs.

 

Southington will begin first round CCC play on October 27. Entering the tournament as the No. 8 seed, they will host No. 9 Berlin for the opportunity to advance.
