Southington High School sports continued their fall season with a number of high-powered matchups. Here is a recap of all this week’s results and a look ahead to the Blue Knights’ upcoming games.
Boys Cross Country
The Southington boys cross country team took home first place in the large-division varsity race at the Stratton Brook Invitational on September 6th. Junior Sam Cheek led the way, finishing fourth overall with a time of 17:16.90. Fellow junior Michael Blankenship was right behind him in fifth with a 17:35.60 mark.
Senior Ethan Hoffman was third on the Blue Knights and seventh overall at 17:54.40. Sophomore Logan Perella came 11th with a time of 18:03.70 while junior Stephen Rahenkamp rounded out Southington’s top five, finishing 13 with a 18:09.50. The top 20 finishers all get medals at the Stratton Brook Invitational, which means that junior Joey Tardiff, who finished with a time of 18:38, sixth on Southington and 19th overall, also took home hardware.
The Blue Knights would then face Rocky Hill and Wethersfield in a dual meet on September 9th. They came away with a pair of victories, 23-36 over Rocky Hill and 16-47 over Wethersfield.
Hoffman finished first for Southington and second overall with a time of 17:43, with Cheek’s identical time placing him in third. Tardiff followed closely in fourth at 17:45 while Perella came in sixth with a time of 17:47. Sophomore Liam Thornton rounded out the top five, finishing nine with a 18:15.
The Blue Knights have now won both of their dual meets. Next they take on New Britain and Middletown away on September 24th.
Boys Golf
The Blue Knights boys golf team took on Avon on September 10th before facing Simsbury on the 11th. They’d win their first match before falling in their second, moving to 3-3 on the season.
Southington defeated Avon 167-171. Junior Tyler Guerrette was named medalist after shooting a 36. Seniors Jacob Baush-Lynch and Brady Staszewski shot identical 39s while fellow senior Tyson Mahaffy carded a 40. Junior Kaeden Bass rounded out the top five with a 41.
The Blue Knights fell to Simsbury, although the final score wasn’t available at the time of publishing. Staszewski once again shot a 39 while Mahaffy carded a 40.
Southington will next host a pair of home matches, against Conard and Farmington, on September 16th and 18th respectively.
Boys Soccer
Southington boys soccer played a pair of games this week, losing one and tying one to move to 1-2-1 on the season. The Blue Knights tied E.O. Smith 2-2 on September 8th before falling to East Hartford 4-1 on the 11th.
Boys soccer will be back in action on September 16th when they travel to face Enfield. They’ll then end the week with another away game against Plainville on September 19th.
Field Hockey
Southington field hockey opened their week with a 1-0 loss to Newington on September 9th. However, they would battle back to earn their first win of the season, 2-1 against South Windsor on September 10th. Juniors Sage Burns and McKenna Crist both scored goals for the Blue Knights.
Now holding a 1-3-1 record, Southington will next host East Catholic on September 16th. They’ll then face Masuk on the 20th.
Football
Southington football started their season off with a bang, earning a 35-0 victory over Brien McMahon on September 11th. Senior Rosco started the scoring with a 49-yard punt return touchdown in the first quarter. The Blue Knights didn’t look back from there.
Junior quarterback Luke Prozzo ran it in for a two-yard score before finding junior Walker Mierzejewski for a 13-yard touchdown pass to take a 21-0 lead into halftime. After the break, senior Lonnie Green would score on a three-yard touchdown pass. Prozzo and Mierzejewski then put the final nail in the coffin with a 30-yard touchdown pass. Defensively, the Blue Knights only allowed 33 yards of total offense.
Southington will look to continue their winning ways when they travel to face Glastonbury on September 18th. Their first home game will come a week later on September 26th against St. Joseph.
Girls Cross Country
The girls cross country team had a strong showing of their own at the Stratton Brook Invitational, placing third in the large division varsity race. Freshman Maddie Canner-O’Mealy was Southington’s top runner, finishing fourth overall with a time of 22:10.
Senior Jenna Hebert followed, finishing ninth with a time of 22:56 while freshman Emily Phipps finished 11th overall at 23:27. Freshman Emily Blankenship was one spot later, finishing at 23:51 as senior Shannon Serenson rounded out the top five, finishing 25th with a time of 25:25.
The Blue Knights took their momentum into their dual meet against Wethersfield and Rocky Hill on September 9th. Southington came away with a pair of victories, defeating Wethersfield 24-31 and Rocky Hill 17-44.
Canner-O’Mealy again led the way, finishing second overall with a time of 20:52. Phipps followed, coming in third at 21:10. Southington’s senior captains took the next two spots, finishing fourth and eighth with 21:10 and 21:38 times respectively. Blankenship rounded out the top five, finishing ninth with a time of 22:13.
Also undefeated through their dual meet schedule, Southington will next take on New Britain and Middletown away on September 24th.

Girls Soccer
The Blue Knights opened their week with a 4-2 loss against Enfield on September 9th. But they would battle back to take a 2-0 home victory over E.O. Smith on September 12th. Both goals came in the second half, with senior Emily Bafuma scoring the first and sophomore Nadia Imme finding the back of the net on a free kick from about 20 yards out.
Southington will now take their 2-2 record into a September 15th home matchup against East Catholic. They’ll end the week with another home clash against RHAM on September 18th.
Girls Swimming
Southington girls swimming earned a 102-82 win over Plainville on September 9th. They are now 2-0 on the season.
The Blue Knights will next compete at home against East Catholic on September 17th.
Girls Volleyball
Southington girls volleyball entered the week with a trio of games, earning a victory in their third matchup. The Blue Knights are now 2-3 on the season.
Their first game against RHAM on September 8th saw the Blue Knights fall in straight sets, 25-22, 25-22, 25-15. Senior Laura Esguerra recorded 15 assists and six digs while freshman Emme Steindl had 12 assists and a block. Senior Alexandra Wagner recorded 10 kills and two blocks while junior Meredith Barry put up seven blocks.
Southington would face Farmington on September 10th, losing 3-1, 25-19, 25-13, 21-25, 25-22. Wagner had a team-high 12 kills while senior Camilla Garcia had 10 blocks and three aces. Barry and junior Lauren Warych had nine and six kills respectively. Steindl put up 36 assists and eight digs while senior Paige Raines had 12 digs and three assists.
On September 12th, Southington found the win column, earning a 3-2 victory over Bristol Eastern, 19-25, 25-14, 22-15, 25-22, 15-7. Steindl had 39 assists and 10 digs while Raines put up 24 digs. Barry recorded 13 kills and three digs, senior Sehere Coma had six kills and three aces and Garcia put up four kills and three aces. Junior Grace Zehnder had four aces while senior Cameron Wallace made eight digs.
Southington will next travel to face Bristol Central on September 15th before hosting Simsbury a day later. The Blue Knights will travel to New York to face Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake on September 20th.
